The devil's claw, a plant native to the savannas and Kalahari desert in southern western Africa, defies extreme drought by storing water in its storage roots. The dried roots are also the parts of the plant that contain the bitter iridoid glycosides including harpagosite, a phytosterol mixture containing phenylpropanoids, triterpenes and flavonoids. These roots are used for medicinal purposes. The devil's claw extract has a pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory effect. the clinical studies show good results in the treatment of pain in the musculoskeletal system, such as joint pain, arthrosis also due to rheumatic changes. The condition of the joints is significantly improved, mobility is increased, morning stiffness is alleviated, cartilage degeneration is slowed down, the regeneration of connective tissue in the joints is initiated. In the case of inflammation, devil's claw lowers elevated bilirubin and uric acid levels in the blood. Since the devil's claw contains many bitter substances and has a gall-forming effect, it stimulates the appetite and digestion. Clinical studies have confirmed the stool-regulating effect of diarrhea and constipation, flatulence, lowering of elevated levels of uric acid and cholesterol, and as a means of stimulating lymphatic flow and thereby having a detoxifying effect. Due to the sitosterols it contains, devil's claw has a beneficial effect on prostate enlargement. Referring to folk medicine and medical experience, Wikipedia states the following areas of application for African devil's claw: joint pain in Crohn's disease, lumbago, headaches, lower back pain due to degenerative changes, neuralgia, polyarthritis - chronic inflammatory, chronic rheumatic diseases, tendinitis, soft tissue rheumatism, wounds, ulcers and boils. Devil's claw should not be taken in case of stomach irritation, ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract, gallstones, pregnancy or insulin intake. The gel contains devil's claw extract, allantoin and castor oil (PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil). The castor oil directs the ingredients of the devil's claw extract into the deeper layers of the skin, allantoin supplies the skin with moisture, increases its elasticity and supports its regeneration
